Last year’s global pandemic provided valuable learning experiences for just about every market. Medical device manufacturers grappled with unprecedented supply chain and demand challenges that spurred rapid and dramatic changes to the way critical devices were designed and manufactured. Out of necessity, engineering innovation became an essential part of the solution.

Now, even as the pandemic subsides, the benefits derived from a renewed emphasis on product innovation is creating additional demand for innovation across the entire medical device industry. But the same barriers to innovation remain. Namely, that truly innovative engineering for highly reliable medical devices requires specialized skillsets to meet material and design requirements—and, most importantly, to develop the desired end-use functionality.

Most medical device organizations’ close relationships with their customers allow them to identify what the market wants—and where the market is heading next. But bringing those ideas to life often takes multiple rounds of prototyping in order to reach a final, manufacturable design that meets every specification—with every delay representing significant lost revenue. , only 21% of executives feel they have the internal expertise, resources, and commitment to pursue these new growth opportunities successfully on their own.

Minnesota Rubber & Plastics (MRP) specializes in addressing this very challenge. For over 75 years, MRP’s materials scientists and engineers have helped in-house engineering teams develop devices and therapies with advanced elastomer and thermoplastic solutions. When presented with difficult sealing and component challenges, MRP’s team of engineers brings design experience from decades of medical device projects—and hundreds of device innovations—to offer new ideas and simple solutions to maximize device performance.

The secret to achieving faster speed-to-market and earlier consensus during the design process? Materials scientists, centralized manufacturing and specialized engineering staff that engage in a completely collaborative experience. MRP engineers are eager to get involved at the early stages of research and development, working with in-house teams from requirements building to prototyping to final production. Throughout the MRP innovation process, engineers walk in-house teams through a consultative process including exercises specifically designed to discover, design, develop and deploy a winning solution.

As the need for medical device innovation accelerates in the pandemic’s aftermath, the entire healthcare market is shifting to value return-on-investment (ROI), performance and device longevity like never before. The manufacturers that rise to the top of this new healthcare ecosystem will be those who are able to collaborate with the right experts to help them meet these rising expectations and deliver innovative solutions that tick each one of these boxes. Learn more about our medical device components capabilities.

Joining forces with nearly 100 companies across the Twin Cities of Minnesota to rally around a lifesaving mission

Minnesota Rubber and Plastics is a proud sponsor of the 2021 America Heart Association Twin Cities Heart Walk. In 2020, Minnesota Rubber and Plastics was a top fundraiser in the effort.

As a proud sponsor, we will once again be walking to support and honor those that have been touched by heart disease and stroke, to support continued research and innovation, and to be a part of building a healthier Minnesota community. Here are just a few examples of the amazing work the AHA has done this past year. These initiatives are made possible through fundraising events like the Heart Walk:

Local Investment in Covid-19 ֱ
The AHA has awarded 12 scientific teams more than $2.5 million in rapid response research to study heart and brain health correlation to COVID-19 including Mayo Clinic locally in Minnesota. The AHA is working diligently to provide reliable, science-based information for the approximately 120 million people in the United States who currently have one or more cardiovascular conditions and who already may be at higher risk for COVID-19 complications as well as those who live in historically excluded communities hit hard by COVID-19 and systemic health disparities. Participating in events like the Heart Walk helps to drive this lifesaving work forward and offers thousands of Minnesotans critical resources in times of need.

Don’t Die of Doubt
The American Heart Association launched a national and localized educational campaign, Don’t Die of Doubt, to encourage the community to seek necessary and appropriate medical treatment during COVID. Countless lives have already been saved due to the awareness this message brings to the community. The AHA, the corporate community, and healthcare, all have stressed the importance of not ignoring signs and symptoms of a heart attack and are working together to ensure no one Dies of Doubt.

The Heart Walk will take place on Saturday, May 22nd and we want to invite Twin Cities community members to join us!

Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), is an extremely versatile and flexible analytical technique for measuring the physical properties of a range of materials. Recently, Minnesota Rubber and Plastics (MRP) invested in its already substantial material science capabilities with the purchase of a TA Instruments Discovery DMA 850, to deliver powerful DMA analysis capabilities to its customers. Examples of physical properties that can be analyzed with DMA include storage modulus, and glass transition temperature. These are instrumental in assisting MRP, and our customers, in specifying the correct materials for an application, and also providing valuable inputs for our finite element (FEA) analyses.

For example, MRP developed a unique test method to measure the viscoelastic behavior of 5 different molded parts using DMA for a customer. MRP was able to identify that the tan delta1 was highest for failing parts. MRP developed a maximum allowable value for this unit of measure and is in the process of implementing this test method into a control plan for the customer’s products, which will drive improved performance and reduced service cost.

Read more about MRP materials science & formulation capabilities and our on- premise advanced materials lab here.

1 Tan delta is a measure of viscoelastic behavior of a material by quantifying the way in which a material absorbs and disperses energy.
