SLOW
by Elsie Gagliardi
Exhibition†‬‮–‬†‬September 1†– ‬October 2, 2025
Slow†‬is an exhibition where artist Elise Gagliardi uses photography to reflect on timeâ€, ‬ritualâ€, ‬and family lifeâ€. ‬Her sharply detailed†‬large-scale images invite the viewer to slow downâ€. ‬Inviting her audience to connect the narratives of life’s fragility between images of a bouquet with a blurred gestureâ€, ‬to a cup of teaâ€, ‬sitting by the fireâ€, ‬or smelling the rosesâ€. ‬She†‬employs traditional candid black and white photos to further quiet each image giving a mystery of timeâ€, ‬and space with an emphasis on figure and formâ€. ‬Each of these images was taken with a medium format digital camera printed on archival pigment based photo paperâ€.

My artistic interests center on the embodied memory of presence and how philosophical experiences are expressed within my body of workâ€. ‬The representation and experience of my artwork can be profoundly intimate and emotionalâ€, ‬reflecting an acceptance and respect for the essence of being humanâ€. ‬The self-reflective moments I cultivate through my work aim to foster empathy and a spirit of connection with othersâ€. ‬Ultimatelyâ€, ‬my artwork embraces and celebrates humanityâ€. ‬The three images I chose are among the most appreciated projects I have had the opportunity to exhibit in prestigious venuesâ€, ‬including the National Museum of Women’s Artâ€, ‬Washington DC†(‬2020â€), ‬the Nelson-Atkins Museum†(‬2023â€), ‬and the UB’s Anderson Galleryâ€, ‬Buffaloâ€, ‬NY†(‬2010â€).
